A young rock journalist hoping to make it (Patrick Fugit) gets a chance to travel across the United States with the band Stillwater for Rolling Stone magazine in 1973. While on tour, he finds himself drawn to a groupie connected to the musicians (Kate Hudson), and also begins to understand the complicated relationships within the group itself, including the tension between the guitarist and singer (Billy Crudup and Jason Lee). "Almost Famous" (2000) comes from writer/director Cameron Crowe, who has previously made films like “Jerry McGuire” (1996) and “Say Anything” (1989). It’s a movie about what goes on behind the scenes in the world of rock music, similar to movies such as “The Rose” (1979), “Oh, God! You Devil” (1984), “Rock Star” (2001) and “The Perfect Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll” (2009). The story is loosely based on Crowe's own experiences writing for Rolling Stone when he was 15 and touring with the Allman Brothers at 16. A funny scene that takes place on an airplane came from a real encounter with The Who; and one of the band’s guitarists, Russell, is modeled after Glenn Frey from the Eagles. I had heard so many good things about it, but I wasn't certain I would enjoy it for much of the first part, though eventually it did win me over as it continued. That plane sequence is definitely a memorable moment. If you’re looking for something more serious and intense dealing with similar themes, “The Perfect Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll” is less well-known but I prefer it to this film. The cast also includes Frances McDormand playing the part of the boy's mother, Zooey Deschanel as his sister, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as an experienced rock journalist. Fairuza Balk, Anna Paquin and Bijou Phillips appear as groupies. Even though Anna’s role is small, she makes a strong impression among the women in the film, along with Kate. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 2 minutes and was filmed in California, Arizona and Manhattan (including the Gramercy Park Hotel and Central Park). GRADE: B
