The pacing is brisk. Following an incident where a furious dad disposes of his daughter’s baby alligator by flushing it down the toilet, the reptile begins consuming discarded animals that have been given a growth hormone. Consequently, the gator expands to become a thirty-six foot long monster and immediately starts frightening Chicago residents. Featuring a clever screenplay from John Sayles, well-executed special effects, and Lewis Teague’s deliberate direction as a “B” movie, Alligator proves to be one of the stronger films inspired by Jaws. Employing satire, the horror elements in Alligator originate with questionable businesspeople participating in schemes. The satisfying retribution experienced by those accountable for the super gator's growth is certainly gratifying. Containing jokes throughout, the film also gains from having Robert Forster and Dean Jagger among its cast members. They occasionally seem a bit puzzled, seemingly out of amusement, but they deliver excellent performances and propel the story to a violent and entertaining conclusion. It’s vastly different than Jaws, though, and this is an amusing, pleasant, and unique kind of film. 6.5/10
