The story unfolds in an upscale restaurant, where "Pelham" (Chris Pine) and his former girlfriend "Celia" (Thandiwe Newton) are drinking wine and reflecting on a past betrayal connected to a failed CIA operation involving the hijacking of a plane in Vienna. Officially, "Pelham" is heading up an inquiry into who among them was responsible – it’s possible either of them did it, or perhaps their superior, "Compton" (Sir Jonathan Pryce). However, this isn't really anything like John Le Carré. The plot relies on Pine’s character to question all the people suspected of being involved and that unfortunately pushes the story toward some fairly over-the-top emotional moments centered around his connection with "Celia." On a positive note, it does give him an opportunity to do something he's been wanting to since “Star Trek” (2009) – be prominently featured on screen. Despite this, the movie moves at an agonizingly slow pace. The spy aspects are mostly overshadowed by the relationship issues and honestly, Pine and Newton don’t have a lot of substance to work with in this talky, laborious film. It is visually appealing, there's a certain style to the production; but not enough actually occurs to hold your attention, the dim lighting begins to feel tiresome, and I was genuinely quite bored after about 45 minutes. The conclusion has an odd quality to it, though it came too late to make much of a difference for me.
