The movie begins with Joe Gideon’s initial tryouts for young dancers, and continues to its final, clever portrayal of his heart attack—a theatrical presentation—demonstrating moments that are both strangely captivating and full of energy as it portrays a performer who is spiraling downward while also achieving great success. When I initially encountered the film, and during subsequent viewings, I hadn't yet explored Bob Fosse’s work; now, it appears his influence can be found in nearly every contemporary dance number, and this excellent movie offers insight into the frequently troubled nature of the artist himself.
