“All That Breathes,” presented as a cinéma vérité documentary, showcases a moving account of human generosity directed toward birds. The film centers on two brothers operating a bird hospital in India, focused on rescuing injured black kites—a common raptor seen flying over New Delhi, one of the most densely populated cities globally. Harsh conditions there, including intense heat, significant pollution, and heavy smog, negatively affect these birds, causing collisions with buildings, entanglement in wires, and even fatal falls. The efforts of these two men have resulted in the saving of countless birds, and director Shaunak Sen’s film is a poignant and emotionally affecting work that has the potential to inspire viewers. Shaunak Sen lets the camera record events as they unfold, placing audiences directly alongside Saud and Nadeem as they respond to calls involving numerous birds of prey. This approach offers an up-close look at what's involved in running an avian rescue, allowing the director to document remarkable instances of authentic experience. Within their small, confined garage, the brothers carefully and tenderly treat injured raptors with limited resources. It’s astonishing how many animals they have assisted, even though not every one can be saved. They consistently put forth maximum effort by dedicating themselves to caring for these black kites; it's a lovely demonstration of empathy toward creatures inhabiting our planet. The film’s striking visuals draw viewers into another culture and effectively convey the environment and overall feeling of the location. It is as relevant to current political discussions as it is artistic, with the director directly addressing serious concerns about climate change and governmental regulations. Despite facing numerous challenges, Saud and Nadeem continue their work toward fulfilling their purpose. “All That Breathes” tells a lovely story using an equally appealing method of filmmaking. It’s a touching documentary that highlights the best qualities in people, portraying two individuals who are working hard to improve the world.
