Robert Redford finds himself in a difficult situation while out at sea, apparently having run into trouble on his yacht. During the night, the boat collided with a large piece of debris, creating a hole above the waterline. While he initially doesn't seem overly concerned because he can still move around and has enough provisions, subsequent storms force him to take shelter in a life raft, devising ways to get fresh water and trying to position himself so that he might encounter one of the massive cargo ships that inadvertently caused his problems. Will he be rescued? The film contains almost no spoken words, only occasional attempts to send out distress signals, leaving us as silent observers watching him struggle to survive the ocean's fury, figure out how to navigate, and get noticed by those enormous ships—something their watch personnel (if they’re even paying attention) would likely never anticipate seeing: a person adrift in a small inflatable boat. It unfolds at a deliberate speed; don't anticipate constant action. However, witnessing this man use his resourcefulness to stay alive makes for a visually striking and absorbing film, though we aren't sure he will reach safety, even with Robert Redford playing the part. I enjoy boats, particularly when there’s champagne and snacks involved. This experience, however, was something else entirely.
