It's hard to recall a time when alien encounters felt genuinely frightening. This is truly awful, and I say that as someone who appreciates many low-budget, cheesy movies. While I wouldn’t describe AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004) as good, I did find it passable; this film, however, makes that movie seem like a high point in the horror genre. A Predator spacecraft experiences issues due to a newly born hybrid of a predator and an alien, leading to a crash landing on Earth (in America). This event gives rise to Requiem, as face huggers run rampant, aliens cause chaos, predators retaliate, and a collection of familiar character types are either killed or do the killing—that’s it. The filmmakers have essentially combined elements from previous installments in the series, borrowing settings and confrontations while simply increasing the amount of blood; there's no real depth to the story. The characters are so poorly written and unpleasant that you end up hoping for the monsters to win, because supporting the humans is unthinkable. We’re given angsty teenagers, a maternal figure reminiscent of Rambo, an ex-prisoner attempting redemption—all tropes seen countless times in other forgettable kill-'em-off movies. There's plenty of gore which will likely satisfy those with easily pleased tastes, and one particularly disturbing scene involving a pregnant woman is something people might discuss at school on Monday. Honestly, you’d be better off watching an inexpensive slasher film from the 1970s; those filmmakers had a reason for their shortcomings, unlike these well-funded but incompetent directors. Drek 1/10
