This film is fantastic, I genuinely enjoy it. It's essentially about a creature on the loose, but the sci-fi prison colony setting—along with its odd religious elements—creates an exciting and unsettling atmosphere. If this had been released as a single movie, without *Alien* and *Aliens* already existing, I suspect that the special edition version would be viewed differently. A group of British actors delivers some tense entertainment, while director David Fincher and cinematographer Alex Thomson create visuals that are both striking and frightening. The metallic look of the rooms and cold concrete combine to produce a truly nightmarish feeling of dread and anxiety. Industrial Punk? Steam Punk? Cyber Punk? Fincher Punk? It needs a label! And Sigourney Weaver is prominently featured, offering a sense of stability amidst all the murderers, rapists, and child molesters. I’m not crazy about the attempt at an overly profound ending, but in its longer form, this film has plenty to offer. It also demonstrated that Fincher was a director worth paying attention to—it's easy to imagine what he could have achieved if he had been allowed to fully realize his own ideas. His later work and reputation makes a joke of the studio executives who were involved in *Alien³*. 8/10
