It’s disappointing that *Aliens*, an otherwise strong action film, diminished the impact of the first movie by substituting a single, formidable and seemingly unbeatable foe with numerous, rather unintelligent creatures. This third installment reduces the number of monsters to just one, but regrettably, it shares the same lack of intelligence. Upon crash-landing on a penal colony populated by tough convicts who haven’t encountered a woman in quite some time, Ripley (Weaver) finds herself in a strange situation. When she learns that an alien has escaped, she requests assistance from the prison director to arm them, and is stunned when informed that there are no weapons available—a reaction that audiences will likely share. While capable performances have occasionally rescued flawed screenplays, that isn't the case here. Dance’s character meets a swift end early on, as does the usual unpleasant warden (Glover), leaving only Sigourney, who remains undeniably compelling, and a varied group of background performers. Despite squandering the elaborate sets, Fincher’s tight camera work does contribute to an atmosphere of stifling dread.
