Alien Romulus doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original two movies featuring Sigourney Weaver, but it isn’t a complete disaster either. One thing that immediately stands out, even against the backdrop of the gritty, industrial environment, is the cast. They seem like they wandered over from a completely different production—something like Beverly Hills 90210. Appearing young and clean-cut, without any visible dirt or imperfections, they don’t quite fit the tone. If you can manage to overlook this casting choice (which I personally struggled with), the story itself isn't much improved. It comes across as derivative, borrowing elements from the initial two successful films in an attempt to create something new. The end result is a passable narrative, occasionally punctuated by some exciting action sequences, but it also has moments that feel silly. The plot feels familiar; haven’t we seen variations of this story before? Ultimately, questionable casting choices and a storyline that unoriginally imitates earlier, better films lead to an acceptable viewing experience that doesn't manage to stand apart. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, I recommend starting with the original Alien from 1979 and then watching its sequel, Aliens.
