Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his team largely adhere to what’s expected from the franchise this time around. The setting is a space station filled with pirates in space, and there's a cloned Ripley—Sigourney Weaver, naturally—though this version lacks any real warmth or empathy, it seems. There’s considerably more gore than usual, creating some genuinely frightening science fiction moments, and certain visuals are truly remarkable; one scene set in a clone lab is particularly striking. A strong ensemble cast including Ron Perlman, Michael Wincott, Brad Dourif, Dan Hedaya, and Winona Ryder all deliver solid performances, while the cinematography (by Darius Khondji, who also worked on *Se7en*) and production design are stunning. However, the film falters towards the end, becoming bogged down in a sense of self-importance, culminating in a bizarre sequence involving an albino alien hybrid baby. It’s disappointing that it ends up this way. The rating is 6.5/10.
