I went into this expecting another obvious effort to capitalize on the popularity of “Alien” and connected to the disappointing "Prometheus," but it turns out there's slightly more going on than that. A group traveling aboard a vessel meant for colonial exploration are on their way somewhere new when they hear some John Denver, which leads them to change course and head toward what appears to be a better planet. Naturally, once they arrive, things aren’t as pleasant as they seemed, and the priority quickly becomes escaping. Nearly four decades have passed since the original movie in this series, meaning most of the suspense has faded considerably. We've already experienced every scare these kinds of stories can offer, and even though Ridley Scott is skilled at building tension, it all feels rather uninspired due to a plot that’s quite predictable—it concludes, then concludes again, then… finishes up. Michael Fassbender does well as "David," but the other actors, including Billy Crudup who usually delivers solid performances, don't have much interesting material to work with. The film is visually appealing, which isn't surprising, but it’s the unoriginal story that holds it back. It brought to mind an older “Star Trek” installment combined with some mythological "Sirens." Despite all this, it’s reasonably enjoyable, though I doubt it will stick with you for very long.
