Michael Fassbender’s performance stood out as excellent, and the film created a striking visual experience, but the characters' choices often felt illogical. I was willing to accept Captain Oram’s (Billy Crudup) choice to travel to an uncharted planet. However, events following David’s haircut, which mirrored Walter’s, were simply baffling and elicited a reaction of bemused disbelief; it seemed unbelievable. David, driven by the desire to create something with purpose, resorts to any method possible. It's hard to believe that none of the other crew members questioned the apparent identity of the replacement Walter and just moved on as if nothing terrible had occurred. The final scene, where Daniels (Katherine Waterston) understands that Walter is actually David and acknowledges her mistake regarding the thousands of colonists and embryos aboard—that moment did provide a small thrill.
