Before Hurt became known mostly for brief appearances, he was truly an impressive performer, and this movie demonstrates it perfectly. A merchant vessel is making its way through space when they pick up a distress signal. They decide to offer assistance, but then one of the crew members contracts something... you’ll need to see it yourself to find out what. Sigourney Weaver delivers a fantastic performance as the tough and practical "Ripley," who organizes the resistance against a creature possessing considerable power, resolve, cleverness, and an unexpected capacity for rapid movement throughout the ship's interior. Ridley Scott builds suspense gradually, with shifts between subtle and intense moments, utilizing sound and lighting effectively; Jerry Goldsmith’s unsettling music and strong contributions from Tom Skerritt and a memorably disreputable Ian Holm combine to create a landmark science fiction horror film that remains frightening even after four decades.
