Near the Georgia coast, a woman trying to support her three sons through her psychic talents finds herself drawn into a local mystery. When a young woman disappears, law enforcement seeks her help in the investigation. The film features performances by Greg Kinnear, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, Giovanni Ribisi, Gary Cole, and JK Simmons. "The Gift" (2001) combines story ideas reminiscent of "Resurrection" (1980), along with a feel similar to “Murder in Coweta County,” “The General’s Daughter” and touches of “Cape Fear” (1991). The ensemble cast is impressive, and the Southern town setting creates a pleasant atmosphere. What's more, the characters have depth and imperfections that make them interesting. Around twenty minutes before the end, it becomes obvious who committed the crime, but the reveal felt predictable and manufactured, prompting an eye roll and diminishing any suspense I had left. I’ll avoid elaborating further to prevent spoilers. Despite this shortcoming, if you're willing to overlook that somewhat uninspired element, it remains a solid drama with something meaningful to offer. Both Cate Blanchett and Katie Holmes are appealing in their portrayals. The movie has a running time of one hour and fifty-one minutes and was filmed around Savannah, specifically in Guyton, Thunderbolt, and Springfield. GRADE: B-/B
