It’s nice to see Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr together in this film. Some of the shooting took place on location, and Boyer portrays a jewel thief who came to Algeria several years prior, essentially running the Casbah like a Mafia boss. The French police are set on catching him, and Joseph Calleia's character is simply waiting for the right moment. Things get more complicated when "Gaby" shows up; “Pepe” becomes infatuated with her because she brings back memories of Paris, which also creates problems with his girlfriend, "Ines," played by Sigrid Gurie. The film might benefit from a bit more energy overall, but it’s visually appealing and the acting from Boyer, Gurie, Gene Lockhart, and Alan Hale—who plays an almost mystical older man—really enhances Henri La Barthe's rather unremarkable, talk-focused 1931 novel. Even if the plot isn’t particularly compelling, it’s still worth viewing for the quality of the performances.
