Michael Caine’s portrayal of the unsavory, London-based character who prioritizes having an attractive woman nearby (and romantically involved) feels perhaps overly authentic. It's not necessarily that he holds overtly sexist views; rather, his perception of women is narrow and utilitarian—he doesn't value them, or anyone else, except when they serve his own immediate desires. The movie traces the character’s gradual awakening as he begins to understand how empty his life is and sets out on a path toward personal growth. Shelley Winters and Denholm Elliott provide noteworthy supporting performances, alongside a group of glamorous British models from the 1960s that help establish the believability of his indulgent way of living. It's difficult to view this film now, given the passage of time; the character is so unpleasant—though that speaks volumes about the quality of the acting and Lewis Gilbert’s distinctive, close-up directorial approach. Sonny Rollins also delivers a memorable musical score.
