A family who have farmed peaches for generations and put a lot of effort into their work face disruption when the landowner passes away. There was an understanding that the arrangement would carry on through the family line, but with the wealthy heir planning to sell the property to developers, there’s no documentation to support this – and now Quimet (Jordi Pujol Dolcet) and his relatives have to rethink what they do while trying to harvest their crop, keeping the family together, and avoiding the urge to fault his aging father Rogelio (Josep Abad) for what's happening. The performers don’t seem like trained actors, but they feel genuine – particularly Albert Bosch ("Roger") as the teenage son who is just as dedicated to the land as his dad, and Dolcet, who portrays a character that evolves from being stubborn and focused on his own goals to someone who understands this is more than just a personal issue. The film’s central theme revolves around the decline of small farms and their replacement by large-scale industrial agriculture that benefits businesses and shoppers but overlooks the families who have tended the land, in both a scientific and traditional sense, for hundreds of years. Films like this often highlight corporate greed, but ultimately I believe it's up to consumers to demand different practices. As long as we want cheap food, stories like this will keep appearing until there’s no one left to tell them.
