It’s surprisingly enjoyable, ranking among the stronger animal-themed films for families that came out during the nineties. It’s considerably better than something like THE AMAZING PANDA ADVENTURE, which was released a year prior; the performances are decent, even from the child actors. One of them is Vincent Kartheiser, who would later go on to become a prominent cast member in the television series ANGEL. The other is Thora Birch, and while she isn’t quite as impressive as Vince, she's acceptable. It could have functioned well as a straightforward survival story, but they felt compelled to introduce some antagonists into the mix, including Charlton Heston, who happens to be the father of the film’s director, Frasert C Heston. I wouldn’t say those villains were bad or anything, but sometimes simplicity is preferable. Nevertheless, as a family adventure movie in the style of what Disney produced during the nineties, it's certainly above average.
