My wife and I decided to watch Aladdin on Valentine’s Day, and it turned out to be a really great night. It was far superior to paying too much for dinner at a fancy restaurant—we both enjoy cooking and would have more fun staying in with Robin Williams voicing the Genie and doing all sorts of impressions. Williams' portrayal of the Genie is simply outstanding. The performance is energetic, incredibly clever, constantly coming up with new ideas, delivering jokes quickly that reference everything from Jack Nicholson to Ed Sullivan to Rodney Dangerfield. I’m not certain children would find it as funny; a lot of the humor relies on remembering television shows and stand-up routines from the 1950s and 1970s. But that's what made Williams so exceptional—he entertained different age groups at once, providing kids with physical comedy while giving adults cultural commentary, all blended together perfectly. This film came out during a time when Disney understood how to make movies people would enjoy. Before they shifted their focus to streaming and franchise development, before everything became about corporate partnerships, when animation studios still believed that a good story, catchy songs, and an extraordinary vocal performance could be sufficient. Aladdin is one of the few Disney films where the supporting character becomes central without dominating the film, with Williams' spontaneous humor enhancing the plot instead of disrupting it. It continues to be wonderful. The artwork is beautiful, the music sticks with you, and Williams demonstrates why he was so unique. It made for a perfect Valentine’s Day evening and served as a good reminder of what Disney used to be like.
