This is definitely among the stronger animated features released during the 1990s revival at Disney. I still find myself bothered by the overly sentimental and saccharine nature that’s characteristic of many Disney movies, but the performances—particularly those of the Genie, voiced by Robin Williams, and Jafar, portrayed by Jonathan Freeman—are excellent, as is the rest of the voice cast, which notably didn't rely on big-name celebrities. The writing is sharp, well-crafted, and offers something for viewers of any age. The musical numbers are nicely integrated and not nearly as loud as what’s become typical in more recent animated films. It makes for a pleasing adaptation of an Arabian Nights tale.
