Chicago demonstrates that people who are clever can find ways to eat. Richard Wilson directed Al Capone, which was written by Malvin Wald and Henry F. Greenberg. The film features Rod Steiger, Martin Balsam, Nehemiah Persoff, Fay Spain, Joe DeSantis, and Murvyn Vye. David Raksin composed the music, and Lucien Ballard handled the cinematography. The name Alphonse Gabriel Capone is instantly recognizable when thinking about gangsters from 1920s America and movies about them. Wilson’s film stands out as one of the stronger biographical pictures in the genre; it's presented in a semi-documentary style and reveals considerable human drama without making the central figure seem heroic. What’s notable is its lack of sentimentality. Steiger portrays Capone (always Steiger, never Caponee!), delivering an intense performance that dominates the film. He embodies Capone so completely—with all his quirks and habits—that it's either unsettling or captivating, a truly remarkable showing. While not entirely correct as a historical account, much of what’s presented aligns with the known facts about the criminal’s life. The attention to detail from that era is impressive, enhanced by Ballard’s beautiful black-and-white photography. It's fascinating, occasionally brutal, and consistently engaging—certainly worth seeing. 7/10
