There’s just a lot going on. AKA is a French action movie featuring a physically imposing lead character—a fairly standard formula, and one that some filmmakers have managed to execute well over the years. The problem isn't with the performances; it's really the writing itself. It seems like whoever was in charge simply gathered a list of elements: a French action film centered around a strong fighter infiltrating organized crime—specifically dealing with drugs, prostitution, and corrupt government officials and politicians. They wanted a human element too, so there’s something about protecting children, touching on child abuse (handled off-screen), modern depictions of French Muslims, neo-colonialism, tragic events, betrayal, a plot twist...and more action, but keeping the budget in mind! The writers and script doctors did what they could to cram everything into one screenplay given their instructions. The director also made the best of it. However, watching the finished product feels overwhelming. There are too many different storylines, none of which are explored thoroughly. It’s possible to make great films focusing on just a couple of themes, but this one tries to pack in a dozen. That's why, ultimately, it doesn't quite work. Everyone involved did what they were asked to do, but the film feels too contrived, with too many different genres and conventions thrown together. (The lead actor’s relative lack of experience also doesn't help, although he certainly has the physique.) It will pass the time; it isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t quite feel authentic either. 6/10
