The presence of a strong cast can’t save this film; it's an unsuccessful disaster movie combining elements of "Airport" from 1970 and "The Poseidon Adventure" released in 1972. James Stewart has a limited role as the owner of an airplane carrying numerous passengers, who soon discover that the Bermuda Triangle is the least of their problems when they encounter fog and a hijacking. Jack Lemmon portrays Captain Gallagher, supported by Lee Grant as the diligent stewardess Karen, as the expansive aircraft unexpectedly plunges into water and drifts off course. The question becomes whether they can reach the surface and contact potential rescuers. Ultimately, the plot stretches believability to its breaking point. During the final thirty minutes, Christopher Lee, Olivia de Havilland, and Joseph Cotton become entangled in a series of short, unengaging dramas where their personal lives are revealed. The special effects look as though they were created in an oversized aquarium; the conversations lack excitement, and the musical score by John Cacavas attempts to compensate for a cast that doesn't quite work together or stand out. Fortunately, this type of film had already run its course by the time this one was made. It’s not terrible—it could be viewed if there’s nothing else on—but it's disappointing considering the impressive lineup of Hollywood stars involved; it’s easily overlooked.
