This movie shouldn’t exist because the original already covered everything it possibly could have. Following “Airplane's” success, there was an immediate push to create a sequel. However, those involved with the first film had reservations, feeling they’d exhausted all possible jokes about airplanes and that the initial story felt complete. I think this concern influenced how the new film was conceived: it shifts the setting from a plane to a space shuttle traveling to a lunar colony, set in a future where technology and fashion remain unchanged from the era of the original. Ken Finkleman directed and wrote the script after the original team declined involvement. A different director, writers, and crew were brought on board, but they largely followed the same formula as before: situational comedy, often quite silly, presented as a series of jokes that sometimes land well and resemble a collection of humorous sketches loosely connected. The humor is generally okay, and I think there was a real attempt to match the quality of the first film. However, the original creators were correct in saying the core concept felt worn out, and repeating it too closely wasn't a good idea. The movie’s atmosphere feels artificial, the ideas about space travel are quite outlandish, the dialogue is strikingly similar to that of the first film, and even some of the best jokes are repeated and recycled—a clear example of mental laziness. The pacing isn’t terrible, but overall the experience isn't satisfying. On top of that, it seems like they reused sets and locations from “Airplane.” If the story takes place in the future on a lunar shuttle, why does it still look like the inside of an ordinary plane? Again, this points to laziness, a lack of enthusiasm for the project, and perhaps a limited budget. Many of the actors are familiar faces from "Airplane," reprising their roles and delivering lines in the same situations. I can’t say the performers didn't try or do their best, but they were clearly given subpar material and involved in something that should have never been made. Leslie Nielsen notably isn't present, an experienced actor who likely recognized this was a mistake. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty return, but their performances are underwhelming. William Shatner is one of the few cast members whose work deserves praise; he handles his role effectively.
