Matt Damon delivers a compelling performance as Sonny Vaccaro, the somewhat overweight Nike basketball executive. During a standard seasonal planning meeting, he recognizes that their limited $250,000 budget won't allow them to secure any significant talent capable of propelling his company out of third place behind Converse and Adidas. Some creative problem-solving and convincing marketing VP Rob Strasser – Jason Bateman provides solid support here – leads him to Phil Knight, the CEO (played by Ben Affleck), who has an unusual idea: focusing all their resources on signing Michael Jordan. There's considerable doubt about this strategy, especially when Jordan’s agent (Chris Messina) indicates that he isn’t interested in Nike at all. Vaccaro is persistent and what follows shows how his unconventional approach, combined with his honesty, resolve, and talent for influencing people, led to something remarkable – not just a moment in sports history, but also an example of innovative business strategy. Viola Davis has several impactful appearances, highlighting that Vaccaro wasn’t the only insightful person involved in the negotiations, and Messina is memorable as the deal progresses (or seems to). Affleck's presence is sporadic, yet he makes an impact; his single scene with the Jordans is notably awkward. Because the story is familiar, there isn’t much suspense regarding the plot itself. Nevertheless, Affleck manages to build a sense of uncertainty that keeps this engaging and entertaining drama moving for nearly two hours, effectively showcasing the relationship between Damon and Bateman. The script moves swiftly, often offering sharp dialogue, and possesses a natural rhythm. Aside from Chris Tucker's portrayal of Howard White, which felt overly reminiscent of Jesse Jackson to me, everything functions well. I’m not certain this is a film that will stick with you long after viewing, but I found it enjoyable.
