Agora is a disorganized and seriously flawed movie that attempts to portray actual historical events. Even with good performances from Rachel Weisz and Oscar Isaac, the film—which was made for a substantial amount of money—somehow feels cheap, like something produced on a much smaller scale. The plot itself becomes almost comical, as it ignores historical facts by changing them and even inventing situations that never happened. This moves the movie away from being an educational portrayal of history and into the territory of complete fiction. The Library of Alexandria was not around when Hypatia lived. Also, we still don’t know exactly how or why the Library of Alexandria disappeared; whether it burned down or was intentionally closed remains a mystery. But the film chooses to create its own explanation for what happened to the library. On top of that, the way Christian riots are shown in the movie isn't correct according to historical records; it’s simply made up to make the story more exciting and less dull. For a film claiming to be about history, getting things right is essential, and this one fails badly. Don’t watch it if you want something that shows what really happened.
