Following her husband's request for divorce, celebrated writer Agatha Christie (played by Vanessa Redgrave) disappears in the middle of the night without informing anyone of her destination. Her escape is cut short when a car crash leaves her stranded, and the authorities begin searching for her. She finds temporary refuge at a hotel under an assumed name, seemingly gathering material for a novel that might involve electricity and water as plot devices. Simultaneously, her husband presents difficulties for the police (Timothy West) attempting to confirm whether she is still alive. An American reporter named “Stanton” (Dustin Hoffman), who was expecting an interview with Mrs. Christie, becomes frustrated by its postponement and decides to investigate the circumstances himself, hoping to locate her. He possesses a certain charm and persuasiveness, suggesting that her discovery seems inevitable. However, what will he uncover in his search, and will she even want to engage with him if he succeeds? The production feels rather lifeless, and Redgrave’s typically understated acting doesn't do much to improve the slow rhythm of this underwhelming story. Hoffman also appears to be simply fulfilling a role, and despite significant effort from the art and costume departments, the narrative fails to truly come alive. It is clearly a fictionalized account of her disappearance, but it seems Michael Apted and Kathleen Tynan could have exercised more creativity and depended less on visual presentation. The final result is disappointing.
