The main thing Against the Ice demonstrates is that not all computer-generated imagery is created equal—it doesn’t necessarily mean any of it is good, just that some instances are less bad than others. There's one sequence in this film that brings The Revenant to mind, except that the bear in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s movie is a highlight; the polar bear here, though, isn’t quite as convincing—I’ve certainly seen more believable ones in those Coca-Cola Christmas commercials. Both scenes involve computer graphics and a stunt performer portraying a carnivorous mammal from the Ursidae family, so what separates impressive from disappointing comes down to how well the actor plays their part when they're being attacked. Like with professional wrestling, the encounter between Leonardo DiCaprio and the bear might not have been spontaneous, and its outcome may have been planned in advance, but that doesn’t mean the actor didn’t endure a real physical ordeal, getting tossed around by wires; furthermore, their facial expressions and body language are dedicated to conveying how serious the situation is, which makes the bear look fantastic, CGI or not. In contrast, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau mostly just lies there during his scene, failing to create any sense of urgency in what should be a fight for survival. This scene is indicative of problems throughout Against the Ice, which relies on clichés just like The Revenant does, but while the latter film manages to be greater than the sum of its parts due to excellent execution, this one is too conventional to ever rise above its chosen genre. Consider how it marks the passage of time starting with “Day 1,” a logical beginning, certainly, but also an obvious one; then it jumps ahead to “Day 26”—my question is, since apparently nothing significant occurred in those first 25 days, why not just begin with Day 26? It’s no shock that Ejnar Mikkelsen (Coster-Waldau) and Iver Iverson (Joe Cole) supposedly "remained friends for life," as they often do—like Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush in The King's Speech, or Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in Green Book. All movies “based on a true story” change things from the original events, and I generally dislike it when they do, but Against the Ice would have been less predictable if the filmmakers had handled the characters’ relationship differently; after all, as Mr. Burns once said following a similar experience, "once you've been through something like that with a person, you never want to see that person again.”
