“Afternoon Delight,” released in 2013 and written and directed by Jill Soloway, tells the story of a bored stay-at-home mom in Los Angeles (Kathryn Hahn) who becomes fascinated by a beautiful ‘sex worker’ (Juno Temple) at a strip club. Honestly, my interest in “Afternoon Delight” was primarily because of Juno Temple; she’s just captivating. It isn't a quirky comedy but rather a serious drama with occasional humorous moments. There were times when the film felt too crude and overtly suggestive, making me want to stop watching, but I continued hoping it had something worthwhile to say—and thankfully, it did (details are below). The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes and was filmed in Los Angeles. GRADE: B- EXPLANATION (***SPOILER ALERT*** Do not read further if you haven't seen the film): McKenna (Juno Temple) is portrayed as almost magical, suggesting she’s a witch and even claiming to be one herself. Using her charm, she seems to cast a ‘spell’ on Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) at the strip club, which leads Rachel to seek her out and bring her home. While Rachel genuinely wants to help McKenna escape what she considers a questionable profession, McKenna's intention is to draw Rachel into her lifestyle. McKenna explains her perspective on her work and even defends it. Rachel finds herself intrigued until she witnesses the reality of McKenna’s occupation firsthand and rejects it because McKenna shows no remorse for her choices. Rachel immediately forbids McKenna from babysitting their friends’ children, recognizing that she's a poor role model, but the mother hasn't yet found a way to remove her from the house without causing a stir. Then, the wives go out while the husbands stay home and socialize with McKenna, who is nearby. Predictably, this creates a disastrous situation, allowing McKenna to get back at Rachel and her friends whom she views as judgmental. The ensuing problems prompt Jeff (Josh Radnor) to confront Rachel about how foolish she was to bring someone like that into their home. He couldn’t understand her reasoning: Was she hoping he would sleep with McKenna? Did SHE want to have a relationship with her? Jeff didn't realize that Rachel was under McKenna’s influence and unknowingly carrying out her plans. Fortunately, Rachel comes to recognize her mistake (“waking up” from McKenna’s spell) and seeks to repair things with her husband, now truly appreciating her family.
