I’m unfamiliar with the original Danish movie this film is adapted from, so I can't comment on its faithfulness. Regardless, as a standalone work, it felt like an emotionally jarring experience that simply didn’t resonate with me. Michelle Williams spends much of her screen time appearing withdrawn and sullen—almost as if she exists in isolation. Julianne Moore, while having a more complex role to portray, also struggles to make an impact. The husband and daughter occasionally act in ways that feel strange and unbelievable, and the infrequent instances of strong emotion come across as oddly distant. It's like the characters are so consumed with deceiving one another—and themselves—that they neglect to realize they’re also misleading the viewers. What a shame, because it seemed to possess considerable promise.
