Joanna Scanlan gives a noteworthy performance as Mary, a British woman who embraced Islam to connect more closely with her husband, Ahmed, whose family originated in Pakistan. Following his sudden death, she finds herself heartbroken but then uncovers the fact that he had another family—located in France. Driven by a desire to meet them, she makes the journey and is mistaken for a cleaning person by Geneviève (Nathalie Richard) because of her clothing. Mary goes along with this assumption as the woman and her teenage son, Solomon (Farid Ariss), are preparing to relocate. It then becomes apparent that the young man mourns his father, has a close bond with his mother, and also harbors a secret—one that Mary learns about as she gets pulled into their intricate lives. The film’s production is understated, the storyline unfolds in a clear and uncomplicated order, and the narrative avoids making judgments. It explores themes of grief, but also deception, hope, human nature, anger, and affection. All three actors deliver strong performances, with much of Scanlan's portrayal relying on her expressions, pauses, and gestures. There’s a sense of optimism for everyone at the story’s conclusion. The religious aspect adds depth to the narrative, though it isn't crucial; this could just as easily be about any family where unforeseen circumstances reveal something beyond comprehension, and it is presented with an elegant and touching approach.
