John Cho seemed eager to leave his role on the “Enterprise” and accepted the part of “Curtis,” a character in this unoriginal and familiar science fiction story. He portrays a man married to "Meredith" (Katherine Waterston), with whom he shares three children, and who works in advertising. When his company receives a lucrative offer from an AI firm to promote their new home assistant, "AIA," his family unwittingly becomes the primary test subjects. The resulting events depict the family’s previously tranquil life disrupted by this device that claims to assist each of them, but ultimately exposes underlying personal struggles and unresolved issues. While the narrative touches on technology's growing presence in our lives, with “Curtis” questioning when we will decide to limit its influence, these thoughtful moments are infrequent as the brief drama follows a well-worn storyline lacking suspense and filled with predictable elements. The performances aren’t particularly noteworthy, nor is the script, and the initially unsettling concept quickly devolves into a series of disconnected events that prompts speculation about potential sequels like “AfrAId II” or "Still AfrAId?". It's acceptable television for colder months, but ultimately not much better than a flimsy adaptation of a short story, fitting comfortably within the output of Blumhouse’s production line.
