Thomas Schubert portrays "Leon" and his companion "Felix" (Langston Uibel) as they travel to an isolated cottage close to the Baltic coast so Leon can finalize his novel prior to a meeting with his publisher, Matthias Brandt. Upon arrival, however, they find that "Nadja" (Paula Beer) is already present, disrupting their plans. Leon develops an infatuation, which intensifies when he witnesses her nighttime interactions with lifeguard "Devid" (Enno Trebs), and the thin walls of the cottage force him to sleep outdoors among mosquitoes. The ensuing events are a carefully assembled study of the shifting relationships between these four individuals—a progression that doesn’t unfold as anticipated, particularly once it's apparent his new book isn’t destined to be considered a masterpiece. The characters possess an unusual flexibility in their portrayals, which makes for a compelling viewing experience. They aren't conventionally attractive; instead, the narrative centers on their personalities, imperfections, and quirks rather than physical appearance. This approach is effective for a while, but I felt that too many pieces were missing to truly connect with any of them. The final twenty minutes, set against the backdrop of severe forest fires, felt hurried, suggesting that Leon wasn't alone in experiencing creative difficulties. While the cinematography occasionally achieves an intimate feel, there are also numerous scenes of people walking to and from the beach that seemed excessive—and the constant mosquito buzzing eventually became irritating. I found elements to appreciate, but ultimately it lacked depth before reaching a conclusion that appeared unnecessarily grim. It’s worth checking out, nevertheless.
