The stark beauty of a snowy landscape often lends an extra layer of emotional depth to a narrative, and while this drama isn’t particularly remarkable on its own, Nick Nolte’s acting is truly noteworthy. He portrays "Wade," the sheriff who faces scorn from nearly everyone around him—ranging from his critical former spouse (Mary Beth Hurt) to his imposing father (James Coburn). When news of a hunting accident reaches him, he resolves to look into it. For the first time, he seems to have a real reason for being, and begins to suspect that what appeared to be an accidental fall wasn't as straightforward as it seemed, potentially implicating dark schemes threatening the entire town. As his self-imposed burden increases, it becomes clear that he’s barely holding onto his sanity, struggling desperately to maintain control. His initial inquiries are dismissed, but this only seems to strengthen his resolve and push him closer to a breaking point. Whether or not he's correct about the conspiracy isn't really the central issue; what matters is Nolte’s powerful portrayal of a man grappling with a devastating past, a family who seem detached from his struggles, and an increasingly hostile work environment that steadily strips him down—leaving behind only anger and despair. The film explores themes of obsession and the perils to both mind and body when it runs unchecked. Coburn makes a chilling appearance, though limited, and Sissy Spacek also delivers a solid performance as the apprehensive "Margie." It has echoes of inherited guilt and showcases what I consider to be Nolte’s finest work to date. The film can feel quite somber and disheartening at times, but that doesn't diminish its impact.
