A search begins when Boyar Alexandru Dabija hires lawman Costandin (Teodor Corban) to locate a Gypsy serf who has run off. Apparently, Carfin (Toma Cuzin) had gotten too close to the Boyar’s wife, and now there are consequences. The journey takes the policeman and his son, Ionita (Mihai Comanoiu), through different communities and their customs as they pursue and return the fugitive. The plot unfolds in a predictable manner, but that doesn't seem to detract from the experience. Ultimately, the film offers a powerful look at a society structured around those who believed they deserved recognition for not resorting to corporal punishment on those under them. Their generosity—providing food and clothing—felt like an act of condescension toward their people, especially within the Romany community. There are moments of humor interspersed throughout, though some are quite dark and intended to alleviate tension. Even with subtitles, the film communicates enough of the dialogue’s impact so that we can see Costantin and his son change, and gain insight into the prevalent persecution of the time. It's an enjoyable movie, full of action sequences, and definitely worth seeing.
