Chris Columbus’s 1987 film, “Adventures in Babysitting,” also known as "A Night on the Town," centers around a seventeen-year-old babysitter named Chris (Elisabeth Shue) living outside Chicago. When she's unexpectedly responsible for taking the children she’s watching (Keith Coogan & Maia Brewton), plus a friend (Anthony Rapp), into downtown, they encounter a series of unpredictable events. The cast includes Penelope Ann Miller as Chris’s awkward acquaintance at the bus stop, Calvin Levels portraying a car thief, John Davis Chandler as the primary antagonist, and George Newbern in the role of a friendly college student who is attracted to Chris. I found this movie more enjoyable than I anticipated. It shares similarities with an Indiana Jones film, but features teenage characters experiencing adventures within a contemporary American city. The inclusion of Thor was unexpected and delightful, and the young girl has a lively energy. The main characters are easy to root for, and you can feel the genuine connection between them; Brad’s crush on Chris is one example. However, the film doesn't quite do justice to its female characters. While there are talented actresses in the cast, it feels like the director missed opportunities to utilize their abilities effectively—and I don’t mean anything overtly sexual. Consider Shue (who was twenty-one during filming); she is consistently dressed in long sweaters or jackets that conceal her figure throughout the entire movie. This contrasts with her role in “The Karate Kid” (1984), where her appearance is showcased beautifully and respectfully. The film’s length is 1 hour & 42 minutes, and it was filmed in Toronto and around Chicago. The writer is David Simkins. My rating: B+/A-
