A strong ensemble including Humphrey Bogart appears in this lively collection of stories about bravery and resolve at sea during World War II. The narrative begins with him working under Raymond Massey ("Capt. Jarvis") aboard a tanker, but disaster strikes when they are attacked by a German submarine. Following that incident, the group is abandoned on a raft to face the harsh conditions. Eventually, they come together again to guide a convoy toward Murmansk and once more confront the same submarine in a dangerous pursuit. The film’s length feels excessive at times, though Massey, Bogart, and the consistently dependable Alan Hale largely succeed in portraying the skill of these courageous sailors battling both the forces of nature and enemy soldiers while attempting to maintain vital supply routes. The visuals are skillfully done and impactful, as are the special effects; the patriotic elements feel more subtle than those found in many comparable films intended to promote a cause—the film incorporates moments of loss and triumph which contribute to an overall sense of authenticity and believability.
