It seems like power changes people, as demonstrated here; it can even make them lose sight of what’s important. Ace High comes from director Giuseppe Colizzi, who also wrote the script with Bino Cicogna. The cast includes Eli Wallach, Terence Hill, Bud Spencer, Brock Peters and Kevin McCarthy. Carlo Rustichelli handled the music, while Marcello Masciocchi was in charge of cinematography (and it’s Technicolor/Techniscope, naturally). After Cacopoulos, played by Wallach, avoids execution due to a false accusation, he steals money and horses from Cat Stevens (Hill) and Hutch Bessy (Spencer). This kicks off a pursuit, and Stevens and Bessy find themselves reluctantly joining forces with Cacopoulus as he seeks vengeance against those who betrayed and falsely accused him. Is it a spoof or a parody? I’ll let the serious Spaghetti Western enthusiasts figure that out; what matters is that it's enjoyable. It sticks to familiar elements of the subgenre, along with plenty of exciting action sequences while our rough protagonists are driven by greed and revenge. Colizzi doesn't give away too much about these three main characters, which is typical for a Spag Western, leaving you unsure where things will lead. The action is lively, with some great scenes during a Texan/Mexican battle. I’m not entirely sure why that happens, but it’s exciting to watch! It's undeniably derivative, and like many films of the genre, the villains aren’t fully developed. Still, fans of this kind of movie will appreciate it, thanks to the beautiful cinematography which lends a sense of realism to the period, Wallach’s portrayal that echoes Tuco, and Hill and Spencer’s comedic dynamic reminiscent of Abbott and Costello; overall, it's pretty good. 7/10
