The presentation was far from ideal; I watched it as part of a collection of 50 movies on DVDs, and the print had been altered. Roughly ten minutes were removed, and the aspect ratio was cropped to fit within a two-hour television slot including advertisements. Despite these issues, it remains an outstanding film, and I’m left with questions about its history—particularly why it disappeared from view in the United States for a decade (not reappearing until four years after Burton's death), and how it ended up in the public domain. The writing is solid, the direction is quite good, and Burton delivers a truly remarkable performance; arguably one of his finest. The rest of the cast, including both relatively new actors and Billy Connolly, are also very strong. It’s a film that warrants considerably more recognition...perhaps even redemption itself. ;)
