I had braced myself for disappointment when I saw this film's strange title and plot, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. The story is odd, certainly, though perhaps that’s to be expected given Tim Burton's involvement. The description of the movie isn’t entirely accurate either. It’s not that the 16th president uncovers a vampire plan to conquer America; instead, he enters politics and becomes President because of them. The narrative also suggests vampires were responsible for slavery, since slaves would be an easy food supply for plantation owners who happened to be vampires. As I mentioned, it's a peculiar story. Overall, the film is enjoyable if you like vampire/action movies—though that’s probably why you’d want to see it in the first place. There's enough action to keep things moving most of the time. The training sequences felt a little hurried and brief, though the action itself is well-executed, with some blood and fun to be had. The idea of Abraham Lincoln wielding an axe instead of the typical wooden stakes or vampire-hunting darts is pretty cool. He has to be incredibly strong to swing that axe like he does, but it’s a vampire movie, so maybe you shouldn't worry about those details too much. There’s a scene later on where a train is about to plummet into a ravine because the bridge—which vampires have set ablaze—is falling apart. That felt pretty silly and unrealistic. Also, there was an obvious mistake in the makeup department; Abraham and his friend Joshua appear to have aged considerably by the film's end, as one would expect, but his wife and another friend, Will, haven’t aged at all. How that made it past anyone is hard to believe.
