This film, directly overseen by D. W. Griffith, presents a fairly brief account of Abraham Lincoln’s adult years. The story moves from his upbringing in rural Kentucky, including an early romance that ended tragically, to his powerful speeches, his election as US President, and then his choice to free enslaved people—a decision which sparked a war endangering the country's very existence, ultimately leading to both admiration and opposition within a fractured nation. Walter Huston portrays Lincoln, but his performance feels remarkably stiff; the movie itself often resembles an older silent film with drawn-out shots and limited spoken lines, although it does gain some energy closer to the ending events. Kay Hammond provides a spark of vitality as his wife, Mary Todd, yet generally this is a somewhat restrained and overly reverent portrayal of a figure we scarcely have enough time to truly understand in ninety minutes. It’s acceptable viewing, but essentially functions like an introductory primer on the 13th President.
