Louisa Moore - Screen Zealots on About My Father

6/10 · Aug 4, 2023

“About My Father” presents a warmhearted story about being out of place that's simple to enjoy. This comedy, with broad appeal, centers on a father-son bond and highlights imperfections, awkward moments, and the significance of family. Sebastian (played by stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco) is having success in Chicago. He’s deeply in love with Ellie (Leslie Bibb), his ideal partner, and has a positive relationship with his hairdresser dad, Salvo (Robert De Niro). When Ellie’s family extends an invitation to their annual 4th of July celebration at their luxurious country club home in Virginia, she suggests Sebastian bring along his father so he won't be alone during the weekend festivities. Things won’t go smoothly when this old-school Sicilian immigrant encounters Ellie’s wealthy and unusual family, including her influential politician mother Tigger (Kim Cattrall), hotelier father Bill (David Rasche), well-off and unproductive brother Lucky (Anders Holm), and her odd brother Doug (Brett Dier), a directionless hippie aspiring to be a sound healer. The three-day trip becomes even more chaotic when it’s revealed that Sebastian intends to propose, leading to a memorable culture clash. Co-written by Maniscalco and Austen Earl, the film and its characters feel very personal. It's clear that much of the story draws from real experiences in Maniscalco’s life, including his interactions with his own father. As many writers know, family provides an endless supply of inspiration, and reality often surpasses what can be invented. The script is full of natural, genuine humor which is genuinely funny, a stark contrast to the studio's misleading promotional campaign. While there are predictable falls and physical comedy that aren’t particularly sophisticated, despite some elements that don’t quite land, much works well. The movie strikes an ideal balance between clever remarks and silly jokes, offering something for everyone regardless of their comedic preferences. It's a familiar story in many ways, yet this version feels different. Ellie’s family may be very affluent, but they aren’t snobbish; they welcome Salvo warmly and show him kindness. One might anticipate these characters to act superior or rude, but that isn’t the case. Even Ellie’s foolish brother isn't malicious; he simply grew up in a different social circle and doesn't know any other way of life. There are no unpleasant people here, and certainly no villains. Everyone is easy to like, and it’s this good-natured spirit that will win you over. It stands in contrast to the often harsh “Meet the Parents.” I quickly found myself charmed by “About My Father,” from its appealing cast to its witty and playful nature. This movie will make you laugh, feel uplifted, and leave the theater with a smile.
