Filmmakers who are truly gifted sometimes find themselves working under governments that demand conformity. Nuri Bilge Ceylan directs narratives centered on isolated communities, and here, the setting is a primary school. I consider his exploration of wickedness to be exceptionally deep—perhaps the most impactful I’ve encountered. The film doesn't depict evil through overt brutality; instead, it reveals how people are ruined by carefully chosen words and actions, even affecting young children. It investigates how those who perpetrate harm are shielded by individuals lacking the courage to confront them, despite recognizing what is happening. Throughout the story, no one manages to safeguard the vulnerable characters, many of whom seem oblivious to the suffering they endure. Simply outstanding. A must-see.
