Hugh Grant portrays "Will," someone who enjoys a comfortable existence funded by royalties from a Christmas song composed by his grandfather. His romantic relationships tend to be fleeting, with neither person seeking anything serious. He comes to the realization that those around him have settled down into committed partnerships and families, prompting him to decide he wants a son—an imaginary one, at first. Then he meets "Fiona" (Toni Collette) and her son "Marcus" (Nicholas Hoult), and they begin to form a connection, even though the boy occasionally triggers his own less desirable impulses. Despite his flaws, “Will” isn’t entirely without merit, and when a serious incident threatens the bullied "Marcus," the two find common ground through shared television viewing and gradually everyone involved starts to appreciate the value of family—complete with new shoes and imperfections. The writing is notably clever, and because much of the narrative unfolds through concise narration from Grant and Hoult, their story gains an extra layer of sincerity that complements their performances. Hoult truly stands out; his depiction of a remarkably astute and determined child is captivating to watch. While I found the ending somewhat sentimental, I did ultimately desire a positive resolution for them. It's clear why Grant was considered a potential Hollywood star, as he effortlessly delivers a heartwarming film with touches of realism that still resonates.
