Alison Steadman delivers a remarkable performance in this BBC "Play for Today" version, adapted by Mike Leigh himself, portraying the decidedly unpleasant “Beverley.” She hosts a small group of friends for drinks and appetizers, which gradually descends into a sharp, resentful commentary on pretension and outdated middle-class values. The atmosphere becomes strained – underscored by the progressively bothersome noise from the neighboring party being thrown by one of the guests’ daughters. There are moments that elicit genuine laughter, while others feel intensely frustrating, but it remains an impressive demonstration of strong acting and skillful writing.
