I was really taken by surprise with this film! I absolutely loved 'Abigail'; it’s an unexpected treat. I didn’t know much about it beforehand other than its classification as horror on Wikipedia, so I anticipated something like 'Imaginary' or 'Immaculate' (one was disappointing, the other good, just to note). What I actually saw completely blew me away! I had a great time with every minute of this; it’s unsettling and funny at the same time... everyone involved did an excellent job. I’m not even sure where to begin listing all the things I liked about it. Alisha Weir is fantastic, what a truly brilliant performance from such a young actress – she's incredibly believable, especially in the beginning. Melissa Barrera also shines; I previously found her unremarkable in 'Scream' but here I really enjoyed watching her act. Dan Stevens (whom I’ve often considered just okay) is impressive as well, and so is Kathryn Newton. Honestly, everyone on screen is great. I appreciated how they showed the gory, bloody moments—the effects used were fantastic, a real thrill each time. It was also good that the film quickly gets into the story; there's no unnecessary padding. It does a solid job after the initial scenes of introducing the characters before things really start to go wrong, which is when the movie truly takes off. Everything from that point on was a total blast – quite literally! Reflecting on those early scenes, I did worry briefly when it shifted from an enjoyable escape to being set entirely in one location; I feared this would slow things down and make it feel more like those two earlier 2024 films I mentioned. However, every moment within that single setting is wonderful to watch, I have no complaints at all. The pacing is absolutely perfect! I’m almost shocked by how much I enjoyed this, probably because I had zero expectations going in. Looking at my ratings now, I realized I don't even have a favorite horror movie. Apparently, according to Letterboxd, I haven't rated any films in that genre above 9/10 – and even with that score it’s only nine movies, none of which I feel particularly strongly about. A clear gap in my taste has clearly been filled. The reviews for this seem generally positive (at worst), which is good to see. Many people online agree with me; what a ride! It probably doesn't need saying, but I definitely recommend checking this one out!
