I can’t recall ever hearing Tchaikovsky's music employed with such menace, but here it is, used effectively alongside some truly frightening dance sequences! The story centers on a group brought together by "Lambert" (Giancarlo Esposito) to abduct the daughter of a rich man. Their plan involves taking her to an isolated and rather unsettling manor where she’ll be held until her father pays a ransom of $50 million. However, this seemingly innocent girl harbors a secret that's even more significant than the varied group of individuals who collaborated to carry out the kidnapping. "Frank" (Dan Stevens) is in charge, and "Joey" (Melissa Barrera) is tasked with watching over young "Abigail" (Alisha Weir). It doesn’t take long before it becomes clear that she's not the one caught in their trap; instead, they are. What follows is a rather amusing string of bizarre and gory events as their group steadily diminishes, forcing them to fight for survival! The film does lose some momentum toward the end—a common occurrence, really—but a strong cast, including the entertaining Kevin Durand and Kathryn Newton, brisk pacing, and clever writing keep things moving along. The diverse characters (and levels of intelligence) contribute to what is ultimately an enjoyable experience, something like "Cluedo" with plenty of ketchup. Who would have thought red onions could be so useful?
