This was unexpected, to say the least. I’m primarily going to address how completely disconnected this is from the book. What's the point of keeping the same title if it strays so far that fans won’t recognize it? It seems like that’s what Hollywood is doing these days—that's the current formula, really. Here’s the pattern: first, take a well-known story or series; second, rework it to be unlike its original in every way; third, watch it fail at the box office; fourth, blame the existing fans for the negative reactions; fifth, tell those same fans that the movie wasn't intended for them but rather for people who weren’t previously interested and don't want to engage with it; sixth, then be confused about why it didn't do well. But there's more than just that one issue. I came of age in the eighties—I watched made-for-TV movies aimed at kids that looked better than this. Honestly, the production quality resembled an NBC Saturday morning cartoon for children under ten from the nineties, and it was clearly made with very little money. When you hire a cast full of well-known actors, there’s no money left to actually make the movie...and it shows.
