Tobias Lindholm’s film presents a genuinely unsettling examination of the precariousness faced by soldiers attempting to maintain peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan. Pilou Asbæk portrays squadron commander "Pedersen," who endeavors to implement their anti-Taliban strategy while striving for positive relations with the local populace. When a family arrives at their camp seeking aid for an injured daughter, he urges them to return home, promising to check on them the following day. After fulfilling his commitment, he discovers the family has been killed and his soldiers are under fire, necessitating the deployment of air support to rescue one of their own - "Lasse" (Dulfi Al-Jabouri), who sustained severe injuries. Once safely back at base, it becomes clear that the deaths of these civilians have drawn the scrutiny of the Judge Advocate's department, and an investigation is initiated against Pedersen. He’s then transported to Denmark where he confronts a trial potentially carrying a sentence of up to fifteen years imprisonment. While the courtroom scenes themselves feel somewhat underwhelming, they effectively illustrate how those removed from danger readily pass judgment on individuals making split-second decisions in life-or-death situations. The film occasionally relies heavily on military jargon—the meaning of a PID remains unclear—but through other accounts and interactions with his worried family, it raises an important question for both them and the audience: what is their purpose? What connection does this conflict have to Denmark or her soldiers? The lack of clarity regarding the objective of the mission is explored quite well. Whether driven by immediate necessity or detached deliberation, the responsibility ultimately rests with us.
